City or State or Neither?

Thought of by some as just a city, and by residents often as a state with no status, the District of Columbia is unique. When originally founded, its boundaries stretched far beyond where the few inhabitants lived and much of it was rural. It was so much larger than the original townsite, that a portion of it, modern-day Arlington Virginia, was ceded back to the state of Virginia as un-needed. In any event, the nation’s capital and its district is a center of governmental power, a unique city-state, and a constant source of controversy.

Access the District’s official web site here.
